The West Lake Climate Exchange on The Journey to the West

Timezone 8 (798) is pleased to announce the launch of the book publication, Wang Mai: The West Lake Climate Exchange, designed and published by Blue Kingfisher and Timezone 8. Wang Mai will talk about his works at Timezone 8 (798) Thursday night, September 22, at 7:30pm, when the books go on sale.

To mark the publication of the new book, Wang Mai has created a special installation for Timezone 8’s Art Wall. Titled Star of The Military Factory – A Petroleum Dragon, Wang’s installation employs found objects collected from Beijing Factory 798. Wooden molds used to make machine parts for the arms factory now art district and wooden furniture have been re-assembled into what Richard Vine (Editor of Art in America) calls a “petroleum monster that a childlike human figure attempts to subdue.” The works is a comment on the implacable power of oil companies and military complexes in the world today. The installation in Timezone 8’s space in Factory 798 marks a homecoming of sorts for the found objects.

Wang Mai: The West Lake Climate Exchange is a survey of Wang Mai’s recent installations and paintings critically questioning the power and impact of oil companies on the climate and world politics today. Essays by Richard Vine, Art in America, Fan Di’an, Director of China National Art Museum and other leading writers on contemporary art provide critical insight into the process and thought behind Wang’s works.
