2009 Metroplis now - a selection of Chinese contemporary art

Since the beginning of the 20th century, China¡¯s art develops against a unique background, the conflict and fusion of Chinese and western culture. With this background, Chinese artists have a habit of caring about the world, and the world has become one of the most important themes for Chinese artists. With the advent of the information age, it is much easier for young Chinese artists to know the world, thus their minds are more closely connected to the world.

As the one of the most important artist of the young generation, Wang Mai creates artworks which are like fairytales for grown-ups. From his works, we can feel his great interest in Cartoon. Exaggerated and imaginative images have become his basic language of art and he has successfully adapted the language to the theme ¡°World¡±. His works try to represent the characteristics of consumerism, which are closely connected to globalization. He manually makes ¡°monsters of petroleum¡± and gas stations with industrial wastes, which permit audience to witness the consumption and competition revolving around limited resources and establish a new relation between material life and spiritual life.
